History of Video Games

Way back in 1961, a talented team of programmers led by Steve “Slug” Russell developed the world’s first video game: Spacewar. A lot has changed since then, but the fundamentals of what makes a good video game are still the same now as they were back in the 1960s.

Of course, as it ran on a DEC PDP-1 computer, not many people got to play Spacewar. For most people, myself included, their first introduction to the world of video games was Space Invaders, which was introduced in 1978.

Space invaders was designed and developed by Toshihiro Nishikado, while he was working for the Japanese company Taito Corporation. Although Space Invaders was a simple game with simple graphics, it was a massive success. The reason for this was ‘game play’, which is probably the single most important aspect of any computer game. Without it, a game is unlikely to be successful. Even today (2012), the incredible video sophistication available to games developers is no substitute for good old-fashioned game play.

An interesting point to note about Space Invaders is that Nishikado had originally planned to use tanks or airplanes as the attacking force, but the computers of the time were too slow to let the tanks turn and move smoothly, so the familiar aliens were used instead. Nishikado could have used humans instead of aliens, but he felt that this would have been morally wrong.

The 1980s

During the 1980s, arcade games became very popular in establishments such as pubs, bars, hotels, and so on. These games were not, on the whole, free to play and I can remember spending more money playing the games than on beer! Companies such as Atari had been dominant in the games market since the late 1970s, and initially the 1980s were a boom period for companies involved in the industry. During the course of the decade though, the market became flooded, quite often with poor quality games, and by the end of the decade the industry had largely crashed.

There was, however, a new emergence on the scene – small hand held devices such as Nintendo’s GameBoy started to become popular, and would go on to play a major role in the games industry to this day.

The 1990s

During the 1990s the video games industry saw a gradual transition from two-dimensional (2D) graphics to more realistic and visually pleasing 3D graphics. The decade also saw the emergence of new genres of game such the first person shooter, real-time strategy, survival horror, and MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online).

Handheld gaming continued to gain popularity throughout the decade. Although arcade games were still fairly popular in the early 1990s, the use of home consoles gradually pushed them out of the market. And, of course, the 1990s saw the invention of the World Wide Web, which would revolutionise the gaming industry during the next decade.

The 2000s

In the home video market, the 2000s was a decade that was dominated by companies such as Sony, Nintendo, and – to a lesser extent – Microsoft. In the 1980s and 1990s, Sega had been Nintendo’s main rival, but the company left the console market in 2002 in favor of returning to the third-party company they once were. The gradual increase in computer processing power from the 1990s and through the 2000s enabled developers to create immersive and interactive gaming environments, creating a more realistic and enjoyable gaming environment.

Influence of the World Wide Web

In the early days of the web in the mid-1990s, the combination of a lack of computing power and slow transmission rates meant that online gaming did not exist. As computers became more powerful and transmission speeds increased during the 2000s, online gaming slowly became more popular. Technologies such as Flash enabled sophisticated games to be developed fairly easily. These games could then be integrated or embedded into web pages and run in a web browser.

As well as traditional games such as driving, adventure, action, puzzles or shooting games, the gambling industry has been a massive winner due to the Internet. Online gambling and gaming websites are extremely popular and provide an easy way for adults to participate in gambling activities. Strict laws in many countries ensure that the sites are properly regulated.

There are also plenty of sites providing free casino games that use virtual money so there is no financial risk at all in participating in the games, many of which enable you to play other people around the world.

Critical Thinking and the Wizards

What’s Feeding Your Thoughts? Do you look at the news, read books or magazines that stretch your thinking? To be a Critical Thinker you need to develop the insatiable appetite of reading things, not on the surface level, but instead for the thread lines of connectivity with other things you know.

For example, I recently read Jeffrey Gitomer’s article on his experience throwing out the baseball at the Wizards game. Through out the article he relates baseball to sales. Great article and I could have taken it in solely at the level it was offered.

Instead I tied the article and pieces of it to the process of Critical Thinking. Particularly this quote by Doug Dascenzo, the Wizards manager, “They think because they’ve done something once or twice that they can go to the next thing. That’s wrong thinking. There is no “fast” way into the big leagues. Great players have to execute excellently and improve slowly for years, if they want to play in the big leagues. Most of these kids have played baseball all their lives and still don’t know enough to play major league ball. Add to that the personality trait of ‘no patience’ and you have a team of potentially frustrated people.”

That quote got me thinking about two things: 1) the problem companies have in understanding why a high performing person they promoted is suddenly failing in their new position and 2) companies constantly wanting ‘instant’ training for their executives-like can you take a two day program and do it in 2 hours? They feel that since these people are executives they are “bright” enough to catch on faster.

Let’s examine the first problem- promoting people only to find they fail. I find that companies constantly promote leaders based on their performance and then are stymied when that person doesn’t succeed in the new position. They wonder, why?

Well, the simple reason is that the skills and abilities that make you excel at one job don’t necessarily translate to the job above you. Just like the kid that can play baseball all their life but still not understand the “mental” game of big league baseball.

The second problem of timing is answered in the quote when he talks about how there is no fast way in to the big leagues. Instead it is about executing excellently and improving slowly for years. Developing Critical Thinking skills is the same way. It is not a one day course and suddenly your brain is constructed differently. Rather it is a consistent practice of stretching the brain in new ways until it is able to rely less on knowledge and experience and instead be able to take complex information and chew on it in a whole new way. This requires dedication and access to CONSISTENT learning that thread lines all this together to create a sustainable and scalable way of thinking for leaders.

Singleplayer Games

What are “Single player Games”? Singleplayer games are games that are meant for just one person. Only one person can play that game… all alone… all by themselves. For people that may be socially shy or awkward, don’t speak the majority language for that game or are too young to interact with others, this can be a great thing.

With singleplayer games, there is no need to worry about predators, stalkers, youth seeing nudity, hearing language, being bullied, harassment, verbal abuse, losing content, or having to interact with others. You can just enjoy playing your game without a care in the world. So you really don’t have to worry about much of anything since these games are just for one person.

Just because you may be the only one playing the game, that doesn’t mean there aren’t things to be cautious of. While most negative things about all types of gaming come from some of the actual real-life people on those games, some of the negative things are from the type of games and the types of games for the wrong person.

There are plenty of horror games, games with nudity, language, intense topics, intense scenes, smoking, drugs and alcohol, gambling with real life money, suggestive themes, blood and gore, games that have violence, etc., that are just for one person.

You really need to look at the game’s website, social accounts, videos, pictures, description, tags and especially the reviews. You need to gather all the information on the game you’re thinking about buying, whether for yourself or someone else.

If the game is on Steam, Humble Bundle, or some similar websites; they will show you the description, videos by that company, pictures, user and non-user tags, user reviews, website, company, and social accounts. However, if you’re on the game’s website, they might not show everything you need to know to decide whether to buy the game or not.

The least some game companies will show is a very short sales pitch description, a small amount of pictures (5 at best), a video or two by them, and their social accounts. The most they will show is an informative description, pictures by them and users, user reviews, videos by them and their social accounts. I’m not going to get into the good and bad in gaming and how to tell if the game is good or not in this article, that’s another article.

Now you’d think all games would have a singleplayer mode and then add other modes later. After all, it’s somewhat easier to have players play by themselves and create a new world or file than it is to pay so many dollars a month or year to host a server, have the troubles of getting and keeping the server up, and then having players actually connect to the server. At the beginning, you would think some games will add a Singleplayer mode before they add Co-Op or Multiplayer mode right? WRONG!

There are lots and lots of games that only have Multiplayer mode, Co-Op mode, and any other mode that is not Singleplayer. Some games are just meant for Multiplayer, like MMOs (Massively Multiplayer Online). It is possible to play multiplayer games with more than one person on one computer in the same room, but most people call that Local Multiplayer or Local Co-Op. This allows you to play with someone on the same computer in the same room.

You couldn’t play with someone from Sweden if you’re in the USA on Local Multiplayer or Local Co-Op. You have to go online for that. It’s the same as how you talk to people all over the world from Twitter, Facebook, Discord, Skype, etc., which are all online. If your internet is down, you cannot talk to anyone on those platforms because it’s not online.

There are many different types of games and game modes for different people. You can get a game that is strictly singleplayer or a game that has both singleplayer and multiplayer and just play singleplayer for the time being. Some people like the game and not the multiplayer part so they only play the singleplayer part. I recommend starting with singleplayer and then getting a game later that has both so you can ease into multiplayer versus getting thrown into multiplayer.
